The Challenge
An office entrance has two jobs that can pull in opposite directions. It needs to keep unauthorised people out, but it must never prevent people getting out, especially when every second counts.
Add People’s previous access control system was due an upgrade. The business wanted one modern platform covering its main entrance and internal doors, along with a better way for visitors to announce themselves at the two front doors.
The new system needed to be:
- Secure against unauthorised entry at the main entrance and internal areas
- Fail-safe, releasing doors so everyone can leave in an emergency
- Quick and simple for staff to use every day
- Easy to manage as people join, leave or change roles
- Welcoming for visitors arriving at reception
The Solution
CCR Systems designed and installed a UniFi Access control solution across Add People’s main entrance and an internal door, configured throughout as a fail-safe system.
What We Did:
- Video Intercom at the Main Entrance: A UniFi Access intercom with a built-in camera and display was fitted outside the main entrance, giving visitors a clear way to call through and letting the team see who is at the door before letting them in.
- UniFi Access Readers: Compact UniFi readers were installed at controlled doors, so authorised staff can unlock them with a quick tap of their credential. A reader on the inside of the main entrance allows staff to badge out as well as in.
- Fail-Safe Magnetic Locks: Doors are held by electromagnetic locks that need power to stay locked. If power is removed for any reason, the lock releases and the door can be opened freely.
- Door Status Monitoring: Locks are paired with sensors that tell the system whether a door is closed and secure.
- Push-to-Exit Buttons: Clearly labelled push-to-exit buttons on the secure side of internal doors let people leave without needing a credential.
- Emergency Door Releases: Green emergency door releases sit beside each controlled exit. One press cuts power to the lock and releases the door immediately, whatever the rest of the system is doing.
- Neat Installation on a Glazed Entrance: The main entrance is a glazed aluminium frame with little room to hide cabling, so the intercom, readers and releases were surface mounted in tidy enclosures with discreet trunking.
- Centralised Management: The whole system runs on UniFi Access software, so user permissions can be added, changed or removed from one place rather than door by door.

Every electronically locked door has to answer one question: what happens when the power goes? A fail-secure lock stays locked, which suits stock rooms and comms cupboards where security comes first. A fail-safe lock releases, which is the right choice for doors people rely on to get out of a building.
At Add People, the main entrance is also a route out for staff and visitors, so fail-safe locking was essential. It also supports the business’s obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which says emergency doors must not be locked in a way that stops anyone opening them easily and immediately in an emergency.
The green emergency door releases add a manual override on top. If anyone needs to get out quickly, one press releases the door straight away, with no fob, code or button sequence required.
